Oh, Lent, how I love you so

I've been dreading this post. Ok, I'll admit it: I stopped thinking about Lent and didn't keep up with the penalties...but I still view Lent as a success. Every year it is my excuse-catalyst for change.

While many people consider vanity a negative trait, I am thankful for it. I love food a lot more than the average person. My vanity prevents me from getting fat. It is such a driving force that I will work out for 3 hours a day if I need to--and I have. I refuse to be fat.

From my difficulties this Lent, I am much more aware of my sugar intake. I successfully quit tres leches for good and enrolled in a clean eating course to get back on track with everyday eating.

Science says that how our bodies looks is 80% diet, 10% exercise, and 10% genetics. My genetics are horrible; fat runs in my family. One binge session and it is visible on my body. On the same token, one good workout and my body shows immediate improvement. Now, imagine if I could just break the sugar addiction! I've done it before and withdrawals from sugar parallel detoxing off drugs (what an idiot I was for letting sugar back into my life). It is my goal--no, wrong word--it is my expectation that I will break my sugar addiction again this year. No penalties, no deadlines, this is the lifestyle I want to live and am headed towards again.

I have free weights at my house and work out using Body Pump videos at home. But, I only average 10 minutes before I stop. Why is this when I am able to do a full hour at the gym? Laziness. Body Pump is intensive and works each muscle to the point of exhaustion. At the gym, I'd be embarrassed to leave early. The combination of out of shape people not quitting and the gorgeous women who have my dream body keep me motivated to stay. At home I don't have such obvious motivators.

My time right now is limited. I study a lot. At the same time, I've known that working out at home hasn't been cutting it. Recently, I joined the closest gym to my house. They have classes, but not Body Pump.  :(  Using weights machines again is working my muscles differently and--combined with my 10 minutes per day of Body Pump at home--and has quickly increased my strength. Now I have a dedicated place where I can't justify anything other than exercise.. Those who know me, know that I am a weight lifting girl...but I expect to coax/trick/bribe myself into going to a few cardio classes in April, too.

Cursing.. Hasn't this been on my Lent list of sacrifices every year? Maybe.. A few years back, the F-word flew out of my mouth far too often. Now, the majority of my cursing occurs as silent/soft murmurs to myself when something isn't proceeding as expected. Rarely do I curse in the course of conversation. Huge improvement!

Ok, this blog post covered food, exercise, and cursing. I thought I had more than that on my Lent list for this year, but I don't remember and am tired of writing. Happy Semana Santa!

MIT Doctor Links Glyphosate to Autism Spike - Dr. Stephanie Seneff

I have been extremely outspoken regarding my views on GMOs. Even recently, I observed that how someone eats factors into whether or not I will consider him partner material. People may think I'm nuts; but I think all those who don't care about this issue are nuts.

What follows below is from a news story about Glyphosate being linked to an autism spike. Not only is this chemical in Roundup and in GMO foods, it is also in vaccines.

As the new Congress kicks off in Washington, one of the biggest agenda items on the table will be how much money and how much power the FDA and Department of Agriculture will have at their disposal. We’ve already seen signs in the new spending bill that indicate lawmakers want to make it EASIER for big companies to HIDE their GMO products from consumers. As we learn from one doctor at MIT, this GMO craze could cost a lot of children their health. Today, we welcome MIT Doctor Stephanie Seneff.

In her recent article she makes a very stark warning that by the year 2025, half of all American children could have autism. That’s an alarming increase over one decade.

She claims it all comes down to a chemical called glyphosate, commonly found in Monsanto’s herbicide, RoundUp. So what happens when a human comes in contact with that chemical?

Reversed cancer without chemotherapy or radiation

I strongly believe that traditional chemotherapy and radiation isn't nearly as effective for treating cancer as nutrition and attitude. While the following story is personal, the benefit of sharing my experience far outweighs my need for privacy.

Much of last year I had all the symptoms of late-stage colon cancer. I had diarrhea or soft pencil stools every time I used the bathroom for several months, had obstructions, was bloated, and my lower abdomen and rectum were in severe pain. I lost 35 pounds before I got so nauseous that I didn't want to eat anymore. There were days when I had to lay on the floor in fetal position unable to move from all the pain. I did not have insurance and could not afford the expensive tests I needed.

I turned to Traditional Chinese Medicine. I went to my Chinese practitioner weekly (more often when needed), followed the herbal recommendations he suggested, and switched to organic non-GMO foods. Twice I came in with obstructions so bad that I hadn't excreted in days and he was able to unblock it. I revamped my exercise and meditation routines--adding yoga and Qigong. This was a combined effort: nutrition, exercise, meditation, and Chinese bodywork alignment. I also started going to church. It took 5 months for my health to be restored completely.

Six months after my symptoms first began I was able to come up with resources for a colonoscopy and endoscopy. Even though I had been cured, I went in. The gastroenterologist couldn't explain it. He said there was evidence that I had had chronic irritation, but my health was now fine. No cancer or anything else and my blood work was also back to normal. It is possible to cure cancer and other diseases naturally--without pharmacology. People who don't believe that are generally the same people who aren't willing to spend any time researching.

Be careful when you trust Big Pharma with your life. Anybody who profits off of another's poor health could be guilty of conflicting interests. The longer you are kept alive dependent upon medication, the more money the pharmaceutical companies make. Even if you don't believe that they care more about their own bottom-line than your health, their mistakes are too numerous to count. Often drugs make so much in profit that, even after factoring in lawsuits, the revenue generated keeps it on the market.

An interesting fact, if you are not already aware: Bayer introduced heroin to the general public as a cheap cough suppressant and as a non-addictive morphine substitute. You can imagine how profitable it became. They even encouraged it to be given to children. Oops!

New Year Resolutions

The secret to New Years Resolutions is to only commit to changes that you really want.

Every year people make New Year resolutions that they are unable to stick to. No, that's not accurate.. Every year people make New Year resolutions that they are unwilling to stick to. We make choices in life; if your New Year resolution is to eat better or exercise--and then you don't, it's because you chose not to stick to it. This means that making a resolution that you don't want to stick to is either torturing yourself or lying to yourself.

What is my New Year resolution for 2013? I will stop hitting curbs with my tire or rim. It's not that I am particularly a bad driver, I just haven't been careful enough when parking. My goal is reasonable and I am ready to make this change. Since January 1st, I've been parking while consciously paying attention to where my tires are (in the past I would focus on why I was parking instead of being active in the moment). This is an easy change which only requires dedication. In a few weeks, my brain should be re-programmed to always park this way.  :)

Why did I not choose eating properly or exercise, like millions of other people? Easy. I do these things already. Well, at least 90% of the time.  Not because they were successful during a previous New Year resolution, but because this is the lifestyle I've trained myself to be happy with.

Making resolutions is awesome. It is a way every year to fix something about yourself...something that you are ready to change and are willing to tackle all year long.

Tougher than I thought it would be.

Luckily, the juice didn't taste bad. I consumed enough liquid calories that I wasn't physically hungry, but the lack of solids made me mentally hungry. Once it was time to go back to solid food, I had a gyro. This first meal made me disoriented and sick...so much so that someone else had to drive me home. After a few hours of rest, the headache went away.
The pros of the juice fast: I lost 10 pounds, my skin texture improved, I received tons of nutrients I'm normally deficient in, I detoxed my body.

The cons: same liquid meal for several days, the feeling of hunger, being up at 2am looking at pictures of food like other people look at porn.

Overall, I was very happy with my experience fasting. My friends and I all plan on doing the juice fast again and, in the meantime, supplementing our diets with fresh green juice daily. :)

Juicing for health

A few of my close friends and I are all starting the "Reboot Your Life" juice fast. Different types of juicers juice differently, so for maximum yeild and nutritional count we got masticating juicers.

This is the same kind of juicer featured in the health documentaries: "Fat, Sick, And Nearly Dead", "The Gerson Miracle", and "Dying To Have Known".

We are doing a 10-day fast. Everyday we will consume a minimum of four 20oz juices plus 64oz of water. While we expect to lose weight, our real goal is to clean the junk out our bodies and increase our energy. Assuming we like the results, we may extend the fast to 30 days.
This is what each juice meal will consist of:
6 Kale Leaves
1 Cucumber
4 Celery Stalks
2 Green Apples
1/2 Lemon
1 tablespoon of ginger

Wish us luck!

The Perfect Body

My computer wallpaper shows the body which I consider ideal:

Staring at her reminds and motivates me to eat healthy and exercise. Who is she? Her body is phenomenal.

When I quit smoking pot, I gained 10 pounds that I haven't been able to lose. Today is Renewal Day, and I'm committed to doing whatever it takes to get my model body back.

Aspartame

Seriously. Most people don't pay attention at all to what they put in their body. I was guilty of this for a long time. Years ago I stopped eating MSG, thinking it was the only evil thing I could put into my body. HA! Ignorance is bliss sometimes...until you get sick.

Aspartame is made from: Aspartic acid 40%, Methanol 10%, Phenylalanine 50%. Not only have I stopped consuming aspartame but I check ingredient lists for asparatame building blocks. I actively avoid corn syrup too (much more difficult than you would imagine if you don't cook all of your own meals). For the most part I now Eat Clean. My health has improved and my body now looks better than it has in years. But this isn't about me. This posting is to make YOU think about what you put into your own body. Do you eat foods with ingredients you cannot even pronounce? Have you looked them up on the internet so see what they are?

Read before going out to eat

If you apply these principles when going out to eat, your service will be much more efficient. :-)

(EVERYTHING that EVERYONE does in a busy restaurant affects EVERYBODY. Why not try to cooperate? You'll just get better, faster service which is exactly what we want to give you.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don’t ask for separate checks. If you don’t trust the people you are dining with to pay their proper share, you probably shouldn’t be dining with them. Separate checks slow your order as they cause more work and confusion in the kitchen and more time for the server to cash you out. If worse comes to worse and you are forced to dine with a cheapie or a business partner, tell us you need separate checks RIGHT AT THE START before you even order a drink or appetizer. This will make your service ten times faster, trust me.

And sit beside the people who are on the same check with you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clean up after your children, for the love of God. Do you let them throw spaghetti at home??? Don’t just sigh helplessly as your waiter surveys the slop your child has just spread across the floor. Do you realize that you are causing the patrons after you to wait longer for their tables while the buspeople are swabbing the 5-foot radius of mess around the table? Keep your brats seated in their chairs. They should not be running around a restaurant where people are carrying heavy, scalding-hot dishes high upon trays, dishes that could shatter into shards of glass just perfect for slicing clean through little jugular veins. Order FOR little Johnny, no matter how cute you think it is to see the waitress trying to coax his order out of him. You KNOW what your kids eat. Avoid the trying process of the child changing his mind 20 times or refusing to order while the waitress stands there waiting and waiting and waiting.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you haven’t decided, just tell your server you need more time. It’s that easy. She’ll come back. What she hates is you holding her there while you scan all 50 items on the menu AGAIN as her work piles up and patrons at the other tables are getting impatient, and her food that has just come up in the kitchen is getting cold and dry, and table 4 is waiting for change, and the couple in the corner is ready to order.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are little signals you can give your server to help him give you better service. Unfortunately, most restaurant patrons don’t know them.

CLOSE your menu when you are ready to order. Most servers don’t like to butt in and rush you if it appears you are still browsing.

Catch your server’s eye when you need something. Add this to an expectant look, and your server should come right over. No need to snap your fingers, wave furiously, whistle, yell, or tug on his apron when he is talking to another guest. All of the latter actions will probably guarantee that you will be ignored a bit longer. I can do a great impression of not noticing your rude display.

If you are ready to pay after the bill has been placed on the table, place the check holder to the edge of the table. You can even let the money or the credit card stick out a little. No good server grabs the check holder to see if you’ve put the money in it yet. He or she waits for a signal so as not to rush you.

If you want the server to keep the change, tell him. Just saying “Thank you” or nothing is not enough, and he will probably stand in line at the cashier or fumble around for the right coins and bill combination unnecessarily. Now, this won’t affect you in particular, but it will affect the customers after you.

If you have dietary needs of other food preferences, just TELL us when you order, not when we bring out the food. Again, this affects everybody--negatively.

Place your fork and knife tines down and beside each other on the plate if you have finished with your food. That way the server need not butt in to see if she can take your plate.
